In Victoria, Australia, a Permit to Acquire (PTA) is required each time you purchase a new firearm. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to apply for one:

1. Obtain a Firearms Licence

  • You must have a valid Victorian Firearms Licence for the specific category of firearm you intend to purchase. PTAs cannot be issued to individuals without a firearms licence.

2. Complete the Permit to Acquire (PTA) Application Form

  • Download the Permit to Acquire application form from the Victoria Police website or request it at an approved firearm dealer.
  • If applying for a handgun, an additional handgun-specific PTA form may be needed, especially if it’s for sports or target shooting.

3. Gather Required Information and Documentation

When filling out your PTA application, you’ll need:

  • Your firearms licence number.
  • Details about the firearm you wish to acquire (such as type, category, and, if possible, make and model).
  • Genuine reason for acquiring the firearm (e.g., target shooting, hunting, or occupational use). Ensure it matches the purpose authorized by your firearms licence.
  • For handgun applications, you may also need proof of club membership or other supporting documents.

4. Submit the PTA Application and Pay the Fee

  • Submit your completed application to Victoria Police’s Licensing and Regulation Division (LRD). This can often be done:
    • Through an approved firearm dealer (many dealers offer to submit PTAs on behalf of buyers), or
    • By post if applying directly.
  • Pay the applicable PTA fee. Fees vary depending on the type of firearm.

5. Wait for Processing

  • PTAs generally take up to 28 days for first-time firearm purchases, though subsequent PTAs may have shorter wait times if you already own firearms in the same category.
  • LRD will review your application and conduct any necessary background checks.

6. Receive the Permit

  • If approved, Victoria Police will send the PTA to you. Some dealers can receive the permit on your behalf if they’re submitting the application.

7. Purchase and Register the Firearm

  • With your PTA, you can purchase the firearm from an approved dealer.
  • After purchase, the firearm’s details will be registered to your firearms licence by Victoria Police.

Additional Notes

  • Each PTA is specific to one firearm and cannot be reused.
  • PTAs have a limited validity period (usually 28 days), so you must complete the purchase within this time frame.
