What is, and am I eligible for a Category C Firearms Licence

In Victoria, obtaining a Category C Firearms Licence is restricted and generally only available for specific occupational purposes. Category C firearms are primarily semi-automatic and pump-action shotguns/rimfire rifles, which are tightly controlled and only available to Primary producers, Pest controllers, Collectors and certain Sporting shooters.

1. Primary Producers

Farmers and individuals involved in agricultural activities may qualify for a Category C licence if they can demonstrate a genuine need for the firearm, typically for pest control or managing wildlife on their land.

2. Pest Control

Individuals working in professional pest control—such as pest management contractors—may be eligible for a Category C licence, provided they have the necessary documentation and proof of their employment or business in pest control activities.

3. Collectors

Firearms collectors may also be eligible for a Category C firearms, but this is limited to specific firearms and the licence must be for the purpose of collection rather than for practical use. Collectors must adhere to strict regulations regarding the storage and acquisition of firearms.

4. Sporting Shooters

Certain disabled or junior shooters can apply for a Category C firearm license for sporting use. Please note, that such a exemption might disqaulify them from having a regular Category A&B license.
