How to complete a Firearm Transfer

Both parties must be present at the same time to complete the transfer. This policy is in place to prevent us from having to store firearms for extended periods, as we are not a storage facility. Additionally, it is against the law to process a firearm transfer without both the buyer and seller present.

To transfer ownership of a firearm between two Victorian licence holders, the person receiving the firearm must meet the following requirements:

  • Hold a valid Victorian firearm licence that authorises them to possess, carry, or use the specific category and type of firearm.
  • Have a genuine reason for possessing the firearm.
  • Obtain a Permit to Acquire from Victoria Police.

Both licence holders must then visit a Licensed Firearms Dealer, who will act as an intermediary to facilitate the transfer. Before the transfer can be processed, the dealer will require the following:

  • A valid and current Permit to Acquire
  • Proof of payment for the permit
  • The firearm being transferred

Victorians transferring firearms to licence holders in other states or territories must engage a Victorian Licensed Firearms Dealer. The dealer will arrange for the firearm to be sent to a Licensed Firearms Dealer in the recipient's state or territory. For example, if a Victorian is sending a firearm to a Queensland licence holder, they must use a Victorian Licensed Firearms Dealer to send the firearm to a Licensed Firearms Dealer in Queensland, from whom the recipient can collect the firearm.

Victorians receiving firearms from interstate will need:

  • A Victorian firearms licence that permits them to possess, carry, or use the specific category and type of firearm.
  • A Permit to Acquire that demonstrates their genuine reason for possessing the firearm.
  • A Victorian Licensed Firearms Dealer who can receive the firearm from interstate and act as the agent to transfer it to them in Victoria.
